Why does a hallway cost more per square metre than a bedroom?

More cutting-in per square metre. Hallways have ceiling lines, coving, dado rails, picture rails, multiple door frames, and skirting all meeting in a narrow space. The ratio of edge work to flat painted area is much higher than in a bedroom. Stairwell access also adds time and equipment.

What paint finish do you recommend for a hallway?

Eggshell on walls and satin on woodwork. Both finishes are harder-wearing and more washable than matt emulsion, which makes them better suited to the daily contact a hallway receives. We still use matt emulsion on ceilings.

How do you access tall stairwells safely?

We set up a properly rated stairwell working platform before starting any high-level work. We do not prop ladders against stairs or stair walls. The equipment takes time to set up but allows consistent coverage and safe working at height.

Do you paint the ceiling and walls in different colours?

Often yes. Ceilings in white or a lighter version of the wall colour is common in hallways. In period properties with dado rails, three-colour schemes (ceiling, upper wall, lower wall) are popular. We discuss colour options at the site visit.
