Plasterboard Painting Services

New plaster requires a specific preparation and coating process. Standard emulsion applied directly to fresh plaster fails. We follow the correct procedure every time.

Freshly Plastered Walls

New plaster is highly porous and alkaline. Standard emulsion applied directly will be absorbed unevenly. This leaves a patchy finish and a surface that peels over time.

We assess plaster drying stage before starting. New plaster needs to be fully dry before decoration. This typically means several weeks after application, depending on thickness and ventilation. Rushing this stage is the most common cause of failed decorating on new builds and extensions.

Mist Coat Application

A mist coat is a diluted first coat of emulsion that seals fresh plaster without blocking it. Getting the dilution ratio right is essential. Too thick and it sits on the surface; too thin and it does not provide adequate coverage.

We mix mist coats to the correct ratio for the plaster type and apply evenly across the full surface. Full-strength emulsion goes on top once the mist coat has dried and cured. This two-stage process gives a stable base that holds the finish coats properly. Properties undergoing extension work in Sale, Timperley, and Lincoln regularly need this service as part of a broader interior painting project.

The mist coat stage is not optional. It is the foundation that determines whether the finished decoration lasts.

New Build and Renovation Projects

New builds, extensions, and loft conversions all need coordinated decorating that works around other trades and phased construction.

First and Second Fix

New build and renovation projects often require decorating in two stages. First fix happens before skirting boards, architraves, and kitchen units are fitted. Second fix completes the decoration after joinery and fittings are in place.

We coordinate with builders and tradespeople on phased projects. First fix surfaces get their mist coat and first finish coats while access is easy. Second fix finishes the walls, woodwork, and any patching around new fittings. Properties in the Lincoln town centre regeneration zone and new-build estates on the fringes of Sale and Timperley regularly need this phased approach.

New Build and Extension

Loft conversions and single-storey extensions are common across Sale, Timperley, and Gainsborough Barns. The new space needs to match the existing house in colour and finish level throughout.

We take colour references from the existing decoration before quoting on the extension. Matching sheen levels across old and new surfaces is as important as matching the colour. We paint the full room, including where the new and old surfaces meet, so the join disappears. For rooms with existing ceiling painting already in place, we match the finish level exactly.

Plaster Repair and Preparation

Surfaces damaged during building work, or that have developed cracks and impact damage, need proper repair before any new decoration. Filling and repainting over loose or crumbling plaster produces results that fail within months.

We cut out damaged areas, apply the correct base coat, and skim-finish before decorating. Small areas of plaster damage are often more cost-effective to repair and redecorate than to re-board and re-skim. We assess and advise during the site visit.
