Plasterboard Painting Services
Freshly Plastered Walls
New plaster is highly absorbent and alkaline. Applying standard emulsion directly to a fresh skim coat draws the moisture out of the paint too quickly, leaving a patchy, chalky surface.
A properly diluted sealing coat is used on all fresh plaster before any top coats are applied. For full interior painting projects that include both old and newly plastered rooms, we identify each surface and prime accordingly.
Sealing Coat Application
Bare plasterboard has a paper face that absorbs paint at a different rate to the taped joints and screw heads. All of these areas need the same absorbency before top coats will look even.
The sealing coat is applied consistently across the full surface, paying particular attention to joints and fixings. Once dry, we check for any areas that have absorbed unevenly and apply a second pass if needed.
First and Second Fix
First fix plasterboard, before any skim coat, is sometimes painted directly in utility rooms, garages, or unfinished spaces. This requires a dedicated plasterboard primer rather than a diluted emulsion.
We carry the correct primer for unfinished plasterboard and apply it at the first visit. This is common in Skellingthorpe and Cherry Willingham where loft rooms or utility extensions are built to first fix only.

New Build, Extension and Repair Work

New Build and Extension
New build properties across the Lincoln area, particularly in Washingborough and Branston, often have all walls built from plasterboard. We sequence the work so sealing coats are applied on day one and fully dry before we start top coats on day two.
For extensions added to older properties, the new plasterboard walls need treating differently from the original walls. For ceiling painting in extensions, the same principle applies to new plasterboard ceilings.
Plaster Repair and Preparation
Patch repairs to existing plasterboard walls leave areas of fresh plaster or filler surrounded by previously painted walls. These patches absorb paint at a different rate and show as shiny or cloudy spots unless primed correctly.
A spot primer is applied to all repair areas before painting the full wall. For bathroom painting where plasterboard has been replaced due to damp, we also apply a moisture-resistant primer coat.
Here’s How It Works
1. Free Quote
We visit, check whether walls are new plasterboard, freshly skimmed, or previously painted, and give a fixed price based on the actual surface condition.
2. Surface Assessment
We identify all joints, fixings, repair patches, and areas of high absorbency before any paint is applied.
3. Sealing Coat
A diluted emulsion or specialist primer is applied to the full surface. We let it dry completely before moving to top coats.
4. First Top Coat
Applied once the sealing coat is fully dry. We check for any areas still showing uneven absorption and spot prime if needed.
5. Second Top Coat and Finish
Final coat applied. Edges cut in cleanly. Woodwork painted last.

Plasterboard Painting Costs in Lincoln
Prices below are estimates only. Every room is different. Call 01522 457080 for a precise quote.
Number of Rooms and Surface Area
More rooms or large open-plan areas take longer. Sealing coats add a day compared to painting previously decorated walls. Plasterboard painting in Lincoln typically ranges from £350 to £1,500 depending on the number of rooms and surface condition.
Joint and Fixing Condition
Joints and screw heads that have not been correctly filled before boarding require additional preparation. These are filled and feathered before priming.
New Build vs Repair Patches
A full new build decoration programme needs sealing coats throughout. Isolated repair patches in an existing room need spot priming only, which is quicker.
Typical Price Ranges
Two-room plasterboard repaint in a 1990s detached, Cherry Willingham (walls and ceilings, joints and fixings prepped): £750 to £1,100.
Single extension room in a semi, Skellingthorpe (new plasterboard walls and ceiling, sealing coat included): £400 to £650. Patch priming and full redecoration of one room, Washingborough: £350 to £550.

Sealing coats add one day to the job but prevent two or three revisit calls later. Painters who skip the sealing coat on new plaster are creating a problem the client will notice within weeks.
