Interior Flush Doors
Flush doors are common in 1960s and 1970s properties in Bracebridge Heath and North Hykeham. They have a flat face and are generally quicker to paint than panel doors, but preparation still matters.
Any dents or holes are filled before starting. Hinges, handles, and locks are removed or masked. A specialist primer is applied to bare timber sections before the topcoat goes on.
The finish coat is applied by brush and roller for flush doors, with checks in good light for runs before moving to the next door.
Panelled Doors
Panel doors require more time than flush doors. The moulded sections collect dust and old paint in the corners. On period properties in Bailgate and the Cathedral Quarter, this build-up can be significant.
Time is taken to clean out the moulding detail before priming. On heavily built-up doors, a hot air gun or chemical stripper is used to remove the excess before starting.
The finishing order matters on a panel door. Panels first, then mouldings, then rails, then stiles — doing it in the right sequence avoids drag marks and keeps the moulding edges sharp.
Door Frames and Architraves
Repainting a door without touching the frame and architraves rarely looks right. If the frame is chipped, yellowed, or a different sheen level, the fresh door stands out against it.
We repaint frames and architraves as standard when repainting doors. This keeps the cost contained and avoids the patchy result of painting one element in isolation.
Our exterior painting service covers door frames and surrounds on the outside of the property if the exterior joinery needs attention at the same time.
Fire Doors
Fire doors in rental properties and some domestic settings require careful handling. The intumescent strip around the frame must not be painted over, and gaps between the door and frame are critical to fire performance.
Only thin coats are used on fire doors and clearances are checked before and after. If intumescent strips are damaged or missing, we flag this to the client before proceeding.
This care is particularly relevant in converted period properties near the Cathedral, where original internal doors may have been adapted to meet fire regulations at various points in the building’s history.
Wardrobe Doors
Built-in wardrobe doors often get overlooked when a room is redecorated. They are large surfaces that show every imperfection and are frequently touched and knocked during daily use.
Wardrobe doors receive the same preparation as other interior woodwork. Handles are removed, surfaces are sanded smooth, and a primer applied before the topcoat.

How Door Painting Works
1. Free Quote
We visit the property, count the doors and assess their condition. You get a fixed written price before any work starts.
2. Preparation
Hardware is removed or masked, holes and cracks filled, and sanding or stripping done as required. On heavily built-up period doors, stripping back to bare timber is done before repriming.
3. Priming
Any bare timber sections receive a specialist primer. This seals the surface and gives the topcoat something firm to bond to. We do not skip this step.
4. Top Coats
Two finish coats are applied, allowing full drying time between each, working in the correct sequence on panel doors to keep lines sharp.
5. Completion Check
We inspect in good light, touch up any thin edges, replace all hardware, and leave the doors ready to use.
Door Painting Costs in Lincoln
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01522 457080 for a precise quote.

Interior Flush Doors
Interior flush doors in 1960s–1980s semis in Bracebridge Heath or North Hykeham typically cost £80 to £130 per door. Flat surfaces reward good preparation — any shortcuts show.
Interior Panel Doors
Victorian terrace panel doors on Monks Road or Lindum Road typically range from £130 to £200 per door. Period panel doors in the Cathedral Quarter, stripped and repainted, fall in the same range.
Trade insight: Stripping a heavily painted period door back to bare timber always produces a better long-term result than painting over the build-up. The extra cost is worth it once.
Exterior Timber Doors
Exterior timber doors — front or rear — range from £180 to £320 depending on size, condition, and glazing. More preparation is required outdoors due to weathering and exposure.
For a full exterior view, see our house painting and exterior painting services. For just the front door, see our front door painting page.
What Drives the Price
Three factors determine cost: door type (panel doors take longer than flush), condition and preparation required (build-up on period properties adds time), and number of doors (rate per door reduces when working on several in one session).
