Garage Door Painters in Lincoln

Lincoln Decorators paint garage doors across Lincoln — timber, metal, GRP composite, and uPVC.
- Timber garage doors stripped, primed, and repainted to last
- Metal and steel doors: rust treatment, priming, and durable finish
- GRP composite doors: specialist adhesion primer before topcoat
- uPVC garage doors: plastic primer system, matched or updated colour
- Colour matching available to coordinate with the house exterior
Lincoln’s two-part housing story shapes the garage doors we work on. Uphill properties in Bailgate and the Cathedral Quarter tend to have older timber garage doors on converted outbuildings. Downhill, the 1930s to 1960s semis in Bracebridge Heath and North Hykeham, and the larger detached homes in Nettleham and Washingborough, are more likely to have metal up-and-over or GRP composite doors.

Garage Door Painting Services
Timber Garage Doors
Timber garage doors need thorough preparation before any new paint can go on. We strip back to sound timber, sand the surface down, and fill any splits or deterioration with exterior filler.
Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist exterior primer. Two coats of exterior gloss or satin follow as standard. Timber side-hinged and up-and-over doors are common on older Lincoln properties, particularly in and around the Cathedral Quarter where garages are often converted outbuildings.
Metal and Steel Doors
Metal garage doors fail when the preparation is skipped. Surface rust is wire-brushed and treated with a rust converter before any primer is applied. A rust-inhibiting metal primer follows and is allowed to cure.
The common failures we see on metal doors across Lincoln — bubbling, rust bleed-through at the base and edges, peeling topcoat — are all the result of painting over a compromised surface. Lincolnshire’s damp autumn and winter climate makes metal doors on north and east-facing elevations particularly susceptible to corrosion.
GRP and Composite Doors
GRP (glass reinforced plastic) is the most common composite garage door material, and is the default fit on newer properties across Nettleham, Branston, and Cherry Willingham. It cannot be painted with a standard primer — a specialist adhesion primer is required to bond to the smooth, non-porous surface.
Without the correct primer, the finish peels. The substrate itself does not need stripping — a thorough clean and degrease before priming is sufficient. A correctly primed GRP door takes a finish coat well.

uPVC Doors and Combined Exterior Projects

uPVC Garage Doors
uPVC garage doors can be painted with the right primer. Specialist plastic primers create the bond between the topcoat and the smooth uPVC surface — standard exterior paint applied directly to uPVC will not adhere and will fail quickly.
With the correct primer system, a painted uPVC door typically holds its finish for five to eight years before a refresh. Updating from original white to a contemporary dark grey or black is a popular request from homeowners in North Hykeham and Skellingthorpe.
Combining with an Exterior Repaint
Garage doors are often done as part of a wider exterior repaint. Masonry, windows, fascias, the front door, and the garage door all done in one visit means one mobilisation and a consistent finish across the whole frontage.
See our exterior painting page for full details on exterior repaints. We also cover front door painting and wood painting as part of the same exterior scope.
How Garage Door Painting Works
1. Assessment
We check the door material, existing coating condition, and note any rust, rot, peeling, or adhesion failure before quoting.
2. Surface Preparation
Timber is sanded back to sound wood. Metal is wire-brushed and any rust treated. GRP and uPVC surfaces are cleaned and degreased. No new product goes on over a compromised surface.
3. Priming
Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. Metal gets a rust-inhibiting metal primer. GRP and uPVC get specialist adhesion primers designed for non-porous surfaces.
4. Finish Coats
Two finish coats are standard. Exterior gloss or satin for timber and metal. Specialist flexible topcoats for GRP and uPVC where required. Colour matching is available on request.
5. Final Check
We check coverage on all faces — including edges and the inside face if accessible — before leaving. Any touch-ups are completed on the day.

Garage Door Painting Costs in Lincoln
Prices vary with door size, material, and the condition of the existing coating. We provide a fixed price after assessing the door.
Typical Range: £180 to £450
- Timber up-and-over or side-hinged door (sound condition): £180–280
- Metal or steel door with rust treatment needed: £220–350
- GRP or composite door: £200–320
uPVC Doors
uPVC garage doors typically cost £180–280 to paint with the correct primer system. Double garage doors of any material add 50–80% to the above prices.
Combined Exterior Projects
Having the garage door painted as part of a wider exterior repaint is often the most cost-effective approach. One mobilisation covers masonry, windows, fascias, and garage door together.
See our exterior painting page for full pricing details on complete exterior projects.

Doors in poor condition — heavy rust, peeling in multiple layers, or significant wood rot — require more preparation time and fall toward the higher end. Call 01522 457080 to arrange a site visit and fixed quote.
