Pebbledash Painting in Lincoln

Lincoln Decorators paint pebbledash and pebble dash houses across Lincoln and the surrounding villages.
We cover LN1, LN2, LN4, LN5, and LN6.
What we cover:
- Full-house pebbledash — all elevations, including gable ends
- Partial pebbledash — upper storey bands on inter-war and post-war semis
- Biological growth treatment — algae and moss on north-facing walls
- Pebbledash repairs — filling and pointing areas where pebbles have detached
- Colour changes — transforming a dated grey or cream finish to something current
Birchwood and Boultham have some of Lincoln’s densest concentrations of interwar and post-war pebbledash semis. We work regularly across these areas.

Pebbledash Painting Services
Pebbledash requires specialist techniques that differ from smooth render or standard masonry painting.
How Pebbledash is Painted
Pebbledash is not the same job as painting smooth render. The surface is heavily textured with small stones pressed into a render coat. A standard short-pile roller passes over the top and does not reach the crevices between the stones.
Long-pile masonry rollers are used that press the paint down into the texture, working each section in two directions. Where the surface is particularly rough, a brush is used to work paint into gaps the roller cannot reach. Long-pile masonry rollers and brush work are standard on every pebbledash job.
Preparation and Surface Treatment
Before any paint goes on, the surface must be clean and free of biological growth. Pebbledash is particularly prone to harbouring moss, lichen, and green algae in the textured crevices. North-facing elevations in Lincolnshire rarely dry out fully in autumn and winter.
We pressure wash the pebble dash thoroughly, then apply a mould treatment to any areas showing biological growth. We also inspect for areas where pebbles have become detached or where the underlying render has cracked. These are repaired and made good before painting begins.
Colour Options and Paint Selection
Changing the colour of pebbledash is one of the most dramatic exterior transformations available on a UK semi. Breathable masonry paint is used throughout. A non-breathable coating applied over pebbledash can trap moisture and lead to early failure.
In Boultham and Birchwood, warm stone white and pale grey are the most common choices we see on repainted semis. For smooth rendered walls, see our render painting service.
Partial Pebbledash: Upper Storey Bands
A very common configuration on Lincoln’s inter-war semis is pebbledash on the upper storey only, with smooth render or brick below. This creates a natural visual break and means two different surfaces with two different paint requirements on the same property.
We quote for both elements together where clients want a coordinated finish. Working at first-floor height on pebbledash requires scaffold towers for anything above window-sill height.

Pebbledash Repairs Before Painting
Repairs are part of the preparation process — not an optional extra. We assess and address them before any paint goes on.

Where Pebbledash Fails
Pebbledash tends to loosen at specific points: around window reveals, along the top course at the eaves, and at any point where water has been tracking down the surface. Water softens the render behind the stones.
Minor repairs are included as part of our preparation work on most pebbledash jobs. Where there is more substantial loss, we assess and price this separately. Large patches of detached pebbles or blown render may need a renderer before painting.
Filling and Re-bedding Pebbles
Detached pebbles are re-bedded or filled with a matching pebble dash repair material before painting. We stabilise any areas where the render behind the pebbledash has cracked or lost adhesion.
Minor repointing around window reveals and junctions is included as standard. The aim is a surface that will hold the paint system for the full eight to twelve year lifespan.
Scaffold Access for Upper Storeys
Working at first-floor height on pebbledash requires appropriate access equipment. Scaffold towers are used for anything above window-sill height. This is safer for the operative and gives a better paint finish than working from a ladder.
Scaffold tower hire is included in the quote where required. Birchwood and Boultham’s two-storey semis typically need tower access for the upper pebbledash band.
Spray Application on Large Areas
Airless spray equipment can cover pebbledash quickly and evenly on large, uninterrupted surfaces. Masking requirements are higher because of overspray. We assess which method suits the property during the initial visit.
For most semi-detached houses in Birchwood and Boultham, roller application with brush-in is the standard method. Spray is most useful on large detached properties or gable ends with minimal windows.
Here’s How It Works
1. Initial Assessment
We inspect the surface condition, identify biological growth, note any areas of detached pebbles or cracked render, and confirm access requirements before quoting.
2. Pressure Washing
The whole surface is washed down to remove surface dirt, loose material, and biological growth.
3. Mould Treatment
A treatment is applied to any areas with significant algae or moss growth. This is left to work before painting begins.
4. Repairs
Detached pebbles are re-bedded or filled. Cracked render areas are made good with exterior filler.
5. Masking
Windows, doors, sills, and any surrounding brickwork are masked off before paint is applied.
6. Two Coats
First coat applied by long-pile roller, worked in with a brush as required. Second coat once fully dry.

Pebbledash Painting Costs in Lincoln
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01522 457080 for a precise quote.
Typical Price Ranges
3-bed terraced with pebbledash upper half in Birchwood or Boultham: £550–£900. 3-bed semi in Birchwood or Boultham (pebbledash throughout): £800–£1,500. 4-bed detached (fully pebbledashed): £1,200–£2,200. Scaffold tower hire (if required): £200–£400 additional.
What Affects the Cost
Extent of coverage — upper storey only versus full house is a significant difference in paint and labour. Surface condition — heavy biological growth, detached pebbles, or significant staining adds preparation time. Paint quantity — pebbledash consumes more paint per m² than smooth surfaces; this is included in the materials cost.
Combining Services
Pebbledash painting is part of our wider exterior painting service. For brick, stone, and smooth rendered walls, see our masonry painting page.
