Lincoln Fence Painting Services
After hundreds of completed projects across Lincoln’s hillside Victorian properties and the lower city’s brick terraces, we understand what each half of this city demands from a decorator.
Timber Fence Panels
Panel fencing is the most common fence type on residential properties across Lincoln and the surrounding villages. Featherboard and lap panel fences are affordable and practical, but they need regular treatment to stay in good condition.
Untreated timber absorbs water over winter. When temperatures drop, the water inside the wood freezes and expands, pushing the fibres apart — causing boards to split, warp, and eventually rot. A proper treatment programme prevents this cycle from starting.
We pressure wash panels thoroughly before applying any treatment. This removes algae, moss, and old flaking product that would prevent the new treatment from bonding.
Close-Board Fencing
Close-board fencing is more durable than standard panels and is common on the boundaries of detached village properties in Nettleham and Washingborough. The individual boards are fixed to horizontal fence supports and treated separately.
The posts and horizontal fence supports on close-board fencing are the first elements to show wear. End grain on the posts is particularly vulnerable to water ingress. An additional coat of timber preservative is applied to post tops and rail ends before the main treatment coat.
Close-board fences in exposed positions on village properties often face the full force of Lincolnshire’s westerly and northerly winds. We factor in the additional weathering these fences receive when recommending a treatment product.
Garden Gates
Garden gates take more punishment than fence panels. They flex every time they open and close, putting stress on the joints and any surface coating. A solid film paint that cannot flex with the timber will crack and peel quickly.
Flexible exterior wood stains and paints rated for outdoor joinery are used on garden gates. Where gate frames are loose or hinges have dropped, we flag this before we start.
For a complete exterior timber project that includes gates, fencing, and exterior joinery, our exterior painting service covers the full scope of outdoor painting work across Lincoln.

Fence Staining and Protective Coatings

Fence Staining
Fence staining has become the most popular choice over traditional fence paint. Stains penetrate the timber rather than sitting on the surface. They do not peel in the same way that surface film products do, and they need less preparation when it comes to retreatment.
Coloured stains are available in a wide range of natural tones from light oak through to dark charcoal. The colour reading on weathered timber will differ from the tin, so we always apply a test patch on a less visible section before committing to the full run.
Protective Coatings
Some fence situations call for a more durable protective coating than a standard stain. Fences adjacent to soil beds or with posts showing early signs of surface deterioration benefit from a tougher treatment.
Timber preservatives containing active protection against fungal decay and mould growth are used. These are applied as a base coat before any colour stain goes on top. On heavily weathered or previously untreated fences, a preservative base is always recommended.
For fences on properties where algae regrowth is a recurring problem, we can apply a mould treatment as part of the preparation process. This reduces the rate of biological growth after treatment.
Timber Treatment Across the Garden
Village properties in Branston and Cherry Willingham often have multiple timber structures that all need treating at the same time — fences, gates, sheds, and decking.
Treating all surfaces in a single visit means the same product batch is used across the garden, giving a consistent colour reading. It also reduces the number of preparation visits needed. Our wood painting service covers all outdoor timber structures.
We can combine fence staining with deck painting and shed painting in a single visit if all three surfaces need treating at the same time.
How Your Fence Is Painted
1. Free Quote
We count the panels or measure the run, assess the condition, and give you a fixed written price before any work starts.
2. Preparation
We pressure wash the entire fence run to remove algae, old treatment, and dirt. We allow the timber to dry before any product is applied.
3. Timber Preservative
On bare, new, or heavily weathered timber, a preservative base coat is applied. Post tops and rail ends receive extra attention at this stage.
4. Stain or Top Coat
Two full coats of treatment are applied, working methodically along the run. Each coat is allowed to dry before the next is applied.
5. Completion Check
We walk the full run, touch up any thin patches, and remove all equipment from the garden before leaving.

Fence Painting Costs in Lincoln
Prices below are estimates only. Every fence is different. Call 01522 457080 for a precise quote.
What Drives the Cost
Fence treatment costs in Lincoln typically range from £200 for a small rear garden panel run to £900 or more for a large detached property with close-board fencing on multiple boundaries.
Three factors drive the price: length and height of the run; condition of the timber (heavy algae growth or untreated wood needs more preparation); and product choice (premium penetrating stains cost more but last longer).
Typical Price Ranges
Small rear garden (terrace or semi, Lincoln city, 10–15 panels): £200 to £380.
Mid-size garden (semi in Bracebridge Heath or North Hykeham, 15–25 panels): £380 to £600.
Large detached (village property in Branston or Cherry Willingham, 25–40 panels): £550 to £850.
Related Timber Services
If your garden timber is due a full refresh, we offer wood painting, deck painting, and shed painting that can be combined with a fence treatment in a single visit.
Our house painting service covers the full exterior and interior of your property if a wider refresh is needed alongside the fence work.

Trade insight. Treating fences in spring after the worst of the winter is over gives the product the best chance to cure before the following wet season. Applying treatment to timber that is still cold and damp from winter significantly reduces how long the treatment lasts.
