Garden Sheds

A timber garden shed that is not regularly treated will deteriorate much faster than one that is maintained properly. The boards absorb water through winter, freeze and expand, and then dry out unevenly through spring.

After a few seasons of this cycle, boards begin to split, the structure weakens, and rot sets in at the base and in corners where moisture collects.

Regular treatment stops this cycle early. A penetrating timber stain soaks into the boards and feeds the wood from within. It does not sit on the surface as a film that can peel away.

Every shed is prepared properly before treatment. Pressure washing removes algae, moss, and old loose treatment that would prevent the new product from penetrating. The timber is allowed to dry fully before any stain is applied.

Timber Outbuildings

Larger timber outbuildings, workshops, and log cabins are a significant investment and warrant the same care as the main house exterior. They are also typically more exposed than a small garden shed, sitting further from the house and with more surface area for wind and rain to act on.

Larger outbuildings receive the same thorough preparation as garden sheds. Timber cladding on workshops is assessed for condition before starting. Any boards that have split or have early signs of softness are flagged.

For workshop buildings with painted or previously sealed cladding, we assess whether the existing coating needs removing before retreating. A new treatment applied over a failed old coating does not penetrate the timber.

Summerhouses

Summerhouses in village gardens across Nettleham and Washingborough are often more visible than a standard utility shed. They are a feature of the garden and the finish matters as much as the protection.

Summerhouses can be treated in a matching colour to fences, decking, or other garden timber where a coordinated look is wanted. A test patch is applied first to confirm the colour reads correctly on the specific timber.

Fence and Shed Combined

Many Lincoln homeowners find that when the shed needs treating, so does the fence. The two surfaces are usually treated with the same or similar products, and combining them in one visit is straightforward.

We always quote fence and shed together where both surfaces are due treatment. A consistent colour across all garden timber produces the best overall result.

Preservative Treatments

Clear or lightly tinted preservatives are an option where the natural timber appearance is preferred. These products penetrate deeply into the wood and provide full protection against fungal decay, mould growth, and insect attack without changing the appearance significantly.

Clear preservatives are particularly appropriate on cedar or redwood outbuildings where the natural grain and colour are part of the appeal. They require more frequent application than pigmented stains because UV breaks them down faster.

On new or recently erected sheds and outbuildings, a preservative base coat is applied before any coloured stain goes on. This gives the timber full fungal protection before the decorative coat is added.

2. Preparation

We pressure wash the structure to remove algae, moss, and old treatment. We allow the timber to dry fully before proceeding.

3. Timber Preservative

On bare, new, or untreated timber, a preservative base coat is applied. Corners, base boards, and joints receive extra attention as the most vulnerable points.

4. Stain or Top Coat

Two full coats of penetrating timber stain are applied, working systematically across all faces of the structure. Each coat is allowed to dry before the next is applied.

5. Completion Check

We inspect the finished surfaces, touch up any thin areas, and remove all equipment from the garden before leaving.

Do you treat and paint timber sheds in Washingborough or Canwick?

How often should a garden shed be treated?

Most timber sheds in Lincoln benefit from treatment every two to three years. Sheds in exposed positions on village properties or in north-facing gardens may need retreating every two years. A simple test is to pour a small amount of water on the surface. If it soaks in quickly, the treatment needs refreshing. If it beads on the surface, the existing treatment is still working.

Is it better to use fence paint or shed stain?

Penetrating shed stains are generally preferable to surface film paint products. Stains soak into the timber and do not peel or blister when the wood expands and contracts with changes in temperature and moisture. Standard paint sits on the surface and eventually lifts as the timber moves beneath it. For garden sheds in Lincoln’s climate, penetrating treatment is the more durable long-term choice.

Do you treat inside the shed as well as outside?

We typically treat the outside of the shed as a priority. The inside faces less weathering but can benefit from a light internal treatment if the space is used for storage of moisture-sensitive items. We include internal treatment on request. The inside usually needs only one coat as it is sheltered from direct rain and UV.

Can you treat a shed that has heavy green algae on it?

Yes. Heavy algae means the existing treatment has broken down and moisture is freely entering the timber. We pressure wash the shed and apply a mould treatment to the algae-covered areas before any stain goes on. Applying stain over algae without treating it first produces a very short-lived result.

Do you move items stored inside the shed before starting?

No. We work on the exterior and do not move items from inside the shed. We ask that nothing is stored immediately against the outside walls where it would prevent access to the lower boards. The lower boards near the ground are often the most in need of treatment.

Can you match the shed colour to the fence?

Yes. The same product is used across shed and fence where a matching colour is wanted, applying a test patch first to confirm the colour looks right on both surfaces. Cedar, redwood, and pressure-treated pine all take stain slightly differently, so a test patch is always the right approach.

What if my shed has boards that are splitting or going soft?

Splitting or soft boards indicate the start of deterioration. Treatment at this stage is still worthwhile and will slow further damage. However, boards that are fully soft and spongy at the base are unlikely to be saved by treatment alone. We flag damaged boards during the quote visit and advise on whether replacement is needed alongside treatment.

Is scaffolding needed for a shed?

Not for standard garden sheds and most outbuildings. Ladders or steps are used to reach the apex and upper boards. For unusually tall or large outbuildings we may use a small working platform. We confirm the access method at the quote visit.
