Staircase Painting in Lincoln

Staircase painting with white walls in Lincoln by Lincoln Decorators

Lincoln Decorators are staircase painters who can work in confined Victorian stairwells without drips or mess across Lincoln’s period properties.

What we cover:

  • Spindles, balusters, handrails, and newel posts in any finish
  • Stair risers, treads, and skirting boards along the stairwell
  • Hallway and landing walls connected to the staircase
  • Period staircases in Victorian and Edwardian terraces
  • Modern timber and metal staircases in newer Lincoln properties

After hundreds of completed projects across Lincoln’s hillside Victorian properties and the lower city’s brick terraces, we understand what each half of this city demands from a decorator. Three-storey Victorian terraces on Arboretum Avenue have narrow, steep staircases with original spindles, newel posts, and balustrading where cutting in cleanly and applying gloss without drips in a confined space requires experienced brush technique.

Staircase Painting Services

Balusters and Spindles

Individual spindles are one of the most time-consuming elements of any staircase repaint. Each one must be painted on all four sides, with clean edges at the handrail above and the string below. On Victorian staircases with turned or decorative spindles, the profile requires a thin brush worked into every groove.

We never use a spray gun on spindles in occupied homes. A controlled brush approach gives clean edges without overspray landing on walls, carpet, or flooring. For a full interior painting project that includes the hallway as well as the staircase, we sequence the work so spindles are done before the walls are repainted.

Handrail and Newel Post

The handrail and newel post take more wear than any other part of the staircase. They are touched every day and need a hard, durable finish that does not show fingerprints or scuff marks easily. A satin or semi-gloss trade enamel is used on handrails for this reason.

On original Victorian newel posts with carved detail, we work the enamel into the profile with a fine brush rather than building up a thick coat that fills the carving. Too much paint on a carved newel post is worse than not enough.

Stair Risers and Treads

Stair risers, the vertical boards between treads, are typically painted white or to match the skirting boards. Treads are usually either stained timber or carpeted. Risers are painted as part of the staircase job and exposed timber treads can also be painted if the client wants a painted rather than stained finish.

If treads are being painted, a hard-wearing floor paint is used rather than standard enamel. Work proceeds one step at a time to keep the staircase accessible during the job. This links to the hallway painting service where the ground floor hallway is being painted in the same visit.

Understairs Area

The understairs cupboard or storage area is often overlooked in a staircase repaint. It is worth painting at the same time as the main staircase because access is good and the surfaces are typically bare plasterboard or lath and plaster.

The understairs area is painted as an add-on to the main staircase job. This is a quick task in most properties but makes a noticeable difference if the space is used for storage or if a WC is fitted beneath the stairs.

Victorian and Edwardian Staircases

Period staircases in the terraced streets around the Arboretum and on Baggholme Road are typically original timber throughout. Many have been painted and repainted over decades without thorough preparation. Old paint builds up in the spindle grooves and around newel post joints until the fine detail is lost.

We assess the existing paint build-up at the quote stage and advise whether light sanding and a repaint will give the right result, or whether more significant stripping is needed to restore the profile. For ceiling painting in the stairwell above, we carry out this work during the same visit.

Here’s How It Works

1. Free Quote

We visit, count spindles, assess surface condition, check paint build-up on period staircases, and give a fixed price before starting.

2. Preparation

Loose or flaking paint is sanded back, small holes or splits in timber filled, and carpets and flooring masked before starting.

3. Spindles and Balusters

Worked individually with a fine brush. Clean edges at the top and bottom of each spindle.

4. Handrail, Newel Posts, and Risers

Painted in thin, even coats. Built-up areas sanded back where needed before applying new enamel.

5. Walls and Final Coat

Stairwell walls painted last. Final inspection before removing masking and returning the staircase to full use.

Staircase Painting Costs in Lincoln

Prices below are estimates only. Every staircase is different. Call 01522 457080 for a precise quote. A staircase repaint in Lincoln typically ranges from £450 to £1,500 depending on the number of storeys, spindle count, and the condition of existing paintwork.

Number of Storeys and Spindle Count

A two-storey staircase with 20 spindles is much quicker than a three-storey terrace staircase with 40 or more. Each spindle is painted individually.

Paint Build-Up and Preparation

A heavily built-up Victorian staircase needing stripping takes significantly longer than a modern timber staircase with one previous paint coat. We price preparation honestly.

Included Scope

A spindles-and-handrail-only repaint costs less than a full job including walls, skirting, risers, and understairs area. We quote both options at the visit.

A three-storey Victorian staircase with turned spindles takes a full two days to do properly. Any quote that prices it as a one-day job is either omitting part of the scope or planning to rush the spindles.
