Decking Boards
Decking boards take the hardest punishment of any outdoor timber surface. They face direct sun in summer and standing water in winter.
Every board is cleaned thoroughly before starting. A pressure wash removes algae, dirt, and old flaking treatment. Once dry, any raised grain or rough patches are sanded back to give the stain a clean surface to bond to.
Penetrating deck stains are used rather than surface film products. Penetrating stains soak into the timber and allow the wood to breathe. They resist peeling and last longer on boards that expand and contract with the weather.
Balustrades
Balustrades and vertical rails are often overlooked during a deck treatment. They face the same weathering as the boards but have more joints and end grain where moisture gets in.
Balustrade posts and rails are treated with the same thorough preparation as the deck surface. Joints and end-grain sections receive an additional coat of timber preservative before the top treatment goes on.
For painted balustrades, a flexible exterior wood paint rated for outdoor use is used. This is particularly important on village properties in Nettleham and Washingborough, where decking is more exposed to wind and driving rain.
Steps and Handrails
Steps need a different approach from flat decking. The nosing of each step wears faster than the rest of the board. Wet steps are also a safety risk if the surface becomes slippery.
An anti-slip aggregate is applied to step nosings as part of the finishing coat. Handrails are painted or stained to match the balustrades for a consistent finish.
Loose or damaged fixings are flagged before we start. We will not paint over structural problems. If steps or handrails need re-fixing, we arrange that before the treatment work begins.

Deck Staining and Anti-Slip Finishes

Deck Staining
Choosing the right stain colour and product matters as much as the preparation. Clear treatments show the natural grain but offer less UV protection. Coloured stains provide better UV resistance and allow you to change the tone of the deck.
We carry sample pots and can test a small area before committing to a full coat. This is worth doing on older decks where the timber has faded unevenly.
Our exterior painting service covers all outdoor timber and masonry if you are repainting other surfaces at the same time. Combining deck, fence, and exterior woodwork in one visit keeps the cost down.
Anti-Slip Finishes
Anti-slip finishes are worth considering on any deck that faces north or receives less direct sun. Shaded decks stay damp for longer and grow algae faster. Algae makes the surface slippery well before it becomes visibly green.
A fine anti-slip aggregate is mixed into the top coat. The texture is subtle underfoot and does not look out of place on a residential deck.
For fence painting or shed painting work on the same property, we can quote all outdoor timber in one visit.
Here’s How It Works
1. Free Quote
We visit the property, measure the deck area, and assess the condition of the timber. We give you a fixed written price before any work starts.
2. Preparation
The deck is pressure-washed to remove algae, dirt, and old loose treatment. Rough patches are sanded and any cracks or raised grain treated.
3. Timber Treatment
Bare or damaged sections receive a timber preservative or specialist primer before the main stain is applied. End grain and joints get extra attention.
4. Top Coats
Two full coats of penetrating deck stain or exterior wood paint are applied. Each coat is allowed to dry fully before the next is applied.
5. Completion Check
We inspect the finished surface in good light, touch up any thin areas, and remove all equipment from the garden before leaving.

Deck Painting Costs in Lincoln
Prices below are estimates only. Every deck is different. Call 01522 457080 for a precise quote.

What Drives the Price
Size and layout. Larger decks cost more. Decks with steps, balustrades, and awkward angles take longer to prepare and treat than a simple flat platform.
Condition of the timber. Heavily weathered, dirty, or algae-covered decks need more preparation time. Boards with splits or raised grain need sanding back first.
Product choice. Premium penetrating deck oils cost more than standard treatments. The difference in durability is significant on decks exposed to Lincolnshire winters.
Typical Price Ranges
Small garden deck (town garden, Lincoln city, up to 15 sq m): £350 to £550.
Mid-size deck (semi in Skellingthorpe or Cherry Willingham, 15–25 sq m): £500 to £750.
Large deck (detached in Nettleham or Washingborough, 25–40 sq m): £700 to £1,100.
Deck with balustrades and steps (full treatment, Nettleham detached, 30 sq m): £550 to £850.

Trade insight. The best time to treat a deck in Lincoln is April to September. Stains need dry timber and a surface temperature above 10 degrees to bond correctly.
