Spindle painting is slow work. Each baluster needs to be sanded, primed, and finished individually. A staircase with thirty or more spindles in a Grantham or Gainsborough period property represents significant hand preparation. We sand each spindle back to sound material before priming. On period properties, spindles often carry multiple layers of previous paint that blur the profiles.

The handrail and newel post receive more daily contact than any other part of the staircase. They need a durable finish, typically satin or semi-gloss, that can withstand hand contact and be cleaned easily. Solid timber handrails in Edwardian properties on streets like Gainsborough Road and Cecil Road are often in good condition beneath previous paint. We strip, sand, and re-prime properly before applying a finish that will last.

Painted risers are common in period properties where exposed timber staircases are the design intent. Painted white risers with natural or dark-stained treads is a classic combination in Victorian terraces across the area. We paint risers in a durable finish and advise on treads based on condition and client preference. Alternating treads are done on separate days so access is maintained throughout.

The understairs cupboard and the wall and ceiling visible beneath the staircase are often overlooked in a hallway repaint. A neatly painted understairs area completes the hallway properly. We include the understairs area in scope where it is part of the hallway job.

Period timber staircases in Grantham and Gainsborough properties are substantial structures. Turned newel posts, shaped balusters, and moulded strings all need individual attention. Where staircases have been over-painted many times, the profile of turned spindles can become blurred. We advise honestly at the site visit on whether stripping is necessary to restore the detail.
